A quieter logic for the British weekend

City, coast, countryside — and why the best short breaks begin with architecture rather than amenities lists.

A weekend is a short commission. You have Friday evening to Sunday lunch, and little patience for hotels that confuse activity with atmosphere.

We favour properties where the setting does the heavy lifting: pasture at Harrowden, Atlantic light at Saltmere, a riverside mill shell at Millwright House. The schedule, such as it is, writes itself.

If you need a programme of activities to enjoy a hotel, the hotel may not be doing enough. Or you may simply need a longer walk.
